Coronavirus (COVID-19 ) and Indian system

எப்பொருள் யார்யார்வாய்க் கேட்பினும் அப்பொருள்மெய்ப்பொருள் காண்ப தறிவு.( yepporul yar yar vaai ketppinum apporul meiporul kaanbhadhu arivu)

THIRUKKURAL VERSE-423
Meaning:to understand  the truth in everything, by whomsoever spoken, is wisdom

It’s been in news for past 2 months and till now what I was able to understand  in simple language was it starts  with respiratory  problem like cough, cold fever,  and develops to acute  distress respiratory syndrome (ARDS)like fluid in lungs, leading to shortness of breath and depriving oxygen to organs in turn leading to Septic shock that’s organ failure because of widespread infection leading to low blood pressure , chills, kidney issue and mental disorientation....
Sooo....there is a TAMIL VERSE 948 in THIRUKURAL by THIRUVALLUVAR

நோய்நாடி நோய்முதல் நாடி அதுதணிக்கும்
வாய்நாடி வாய்ப்பச் செயல்

 Meaning:
ENGLISH

Noi naadi noi mudhal naadi adhu thanikum
Vaai naadi vaaippach seyal.

MEANING

The medical rule is to research the nature of disease, it’s cause,it’s method of cure and treat the patient .

NOW let’s come to our modern treatment... how many of u think this is followed? Or let’s leave this aside and come to this threatening and  much talked about virus ,one that’s scaring even the stock market and tourism industry . And along with it people are scared to sit or stand or talk to some country people.
The media , officials and doctors makes things scary for laymen.

BEFORE PROCEEDING FURTHER LET ME CLEARLY REGISTER  I AM NOT A DOCTOR OR RESEARCHER but a person who teaches and practices yoga and believer in naturopath.
It is purely my view .I maybe wrong, but
This view can be considered  or given a thought ...

Now let me come to the post,
From all the news, that  i saw or heard ,what I was able to understand was it’s a respiratory issues which involves lungs... breathing right ? something enters this respiratory track which doesn’t get accepted and couldn’t get out of the body like it usually does for some.
They affect the respiratory system ,that is nasal passage , bronchi and lungs and when they are unopposed  because of weak immune system ( reason -our modern life style and some medicines) they spread to other parts if they find the environment favorable  then they stay ..till some powerful thing goes and drives it out ,and in this process some of our other things get destroyed..isn’t that war? Innocent people too get killed.
So.. what am I coming to say? ...
The entry point respiratory system is the place to stop. And how do we do that ?
Breathing right. Meaning some breathe through mouth...  which will make the visitors easy to enter our digestive track  .Next taking deep breath and not shallow once like many do these days due to stress and environment it becomes habit .sitting straight and giving enough space for lungs to take needed oxygen.
Couple of breathing exercise  Which I feel will help fighting this, is ujjayi and OM along with alternative, kapalapathi and bastrika. To know more on these breathing u can google or some are in this blog too.
Though this has also been researched by western community  it has not been talked in large as one of the treatment to try till now.
Then comes our simple food like turmeric, pepper which really helps immunity. Above all comes the HOPE .

NEXT POST:

Will write about this HOPE AND LOVE in my next post

KAPALAPATHI

Next in our pranayama series is KAPALAPATHI. Though this is one among the pranayama types it is one of the 'Shat Kriyas'(6 cleaning process) 'Kapala' in Sanskrit means skull. and 'Bhati' means to shine. The term 'Kapalabhati' means an exercise that cleanses the skull and make it glow !!!. METHOD: 1)Sit on Padmasana. Keep the hands on knees. Close the eyes. 2)Inhale slowly (but should be long ) 3)Quickly and forcibly exhale immediately by contracting the abdominal muscles with a backward push. Again when inhaling, release the abdominal muscles. 4)Repeat this 4 to 8 times (one cycle) .Continue 3 to 5 cycles . 5)Relax and take few slow deep breath in between the cycles Note:Some people bend their heads when doing fast breathing but personally i feel this will hurt their neck. BENEFITS : It cleanses the respiratory system and the nasal passages. The circulatory and respiratory systems are toned. CAUTION:Stop the practice if u feel pain or strain. Persons with weakness, poor lung , high or low BP, suffering from eye or ear complaints etc should not attempt this pranayama. IT IS BETTER TO PRACTISE THIS UNDER SUPERVISION AND DOCTORS CONSULTATION.

ALTERNATIVE BREATHING

Breathing naturally alternates from one nostril to the next automatically. This may suprise many...as breathing is automatic process,we dont really care about it.Normally only when we suffer from congestion in one nostril, we realise this. "புள்ளினும் மிக்க புரவியை மேற்கொண்டாற்கள்ளுண்ண வேண்டாந் தானே களிதருந்துள்ளி நடப்பிக்குஞ் சோம்பு தவிர்ப்பிக்கும்உள்ளது சொன்னோம் உணர்வுடை யோருக்கே"-Thirumoolar According to Thirumoolar-If we practise pranayama ,it will give us the pleasure of intoxicating wine, will make u brisk and energetic. According to our Yogis , our breath will alternate between nostrils about every two hours(in a healthy person).Though the science agree with this but the timing between the change differs. According to the yogis, if breath continues to flow in one nostril for more than two hours, it will effect on our health. so they have designed this techinque of ALTERNATE BREATHING,which clears any blockage to air flow in the nostrils and reestablishes the natural nasal cycle.

ALTERNATIVE BREATHING:

1)Sit in a comfortable position.Close your eyes. 2)Close the right nostril with your right thumb and inhale through the left nostril. Inhale till 4 counts. 3)Now close the left nostril with ring finger (remove your thumb from the right nostril) and exhale through left nostril.Exhale till 8 counts. 4)Now inhale through the right nostril till 4 counts. Close the right nostril with your right thumb and exhale through the left nostril till 8 counts. This completes one full round of alternative breathing.

CAUTION: PLZ do not do if you if your nasal passages are blocked .

ABDOMINAL BREATHING

I have see most of us breath slightly abnormally which causes to short breath and that in turn leads to other issues. That's because we don't use diaphragm  much but instead use more upper chest :( this is called SHALLOW BREATHING.Inhalation may be long but exhalation will be short.According to Indian literature the ration of inhalation and exhalation is 1:2.
Plz Close your eyes and place your hands on the upper abdomen and watch your breath for couple of seconds. What do you feel while inhalation? does your hand move down or up? If it moves up then you do breath right way, Abdominal or to put it right diaphragmatic breathing. Now all we have to know know is if we are having deep breath meaning how long is the inhalation and exhalation. and how many breath per min.For a normal healthy person it would be somewhere around 12- 15 per min.But it would be better if we can bring that to 8-10 per min.Its said that animals like tortoise and elephants ,whose breath per minutes is much less .if i am right ,i guess its 4-6 per minutes(correct me if i am wrong).i think for giant tortoise is much lesser.I remember a joke by my yoga teacher. He said. god has given each on a limit of breaths in life time and we should not spend it fast :D.anyways.... this can be taken as a joke but can also be considered as a warning if we read what many research say on deep breathing.(i have written in my blog)
Ok.....
lets come to Abdominal or diaphragmatic breathing...
This can be done either sitting or lying down. Its better to do lying down.
HOW TO DO:
Breath through nose slowly(have a count that's comfortable for you initially... say 5-10) in such a way that abdomen expands first not the chest.
Now exhale slowly either through mouth or nose.(initially have a equal no of count as inhalation).
There are other ways of deep breathing and prayanyama too will write more on this soon.
BENEFITS:
Cant just say one.....
Reduces Stress,BP,Sleep disorder, anxiety, weight and much much more than you can imagine(.I would usually tell my students its like massaging your internal organs :)
Till then happy and healthy breathing ;)

REVERSE AGING (PRANAYAMA)

"PRANAN(LIFE)"-OUR BREATH.Our respiratory sysytem is another amazing unit in our body factory. We breath 13 pints of air every min i.e,appox 7 liters. And a healthy person at rest breaths 12-15 times per min.Isnt that amazing!!! BUT R WE BREATHING PROPERLY???? Well....... we all know how to breathe. This is something that occurs naturally without one being aware of it.It may sound stupid if someone told us how to breathe but we develop unhealthy wrong way of doing this because of our wrong posture, life style, pollution etc,and as time goes.... it becomes a part of our normal lifestyle. But what if its wrong...as long as we r breathing???!!! Everyone knows that the brain requires more oxygen than any other organ. If the brain does not gets proper supply of oxygen, it will result in the degradation of all vital organs in the body.If our breathing is too shallow ,quick, our intake of oxygen will be less than the elimination of carbon dioxide. As a result, our bodies are oxygen starved, and a toxic build-up occurs. Every cell in the body requires oxygen for our good health.Even as far back as 1947, work done in Germany showed that when oxygen was withdrawn, normal body cells could turn into cancer cells. An editorial in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine suggested that fast, shallow breathing can cause fatigue, sleep disorders, anxiety, stomach upsets, heart bum, gas, muscle cramps, dizziness, visual problems, chest pain and heart palpitations.Increasing the amount of oxygen in your system through proper breathing will improve in the quality of our bloodstream, enhancing digestion, improve health of the nervous system and rejuvenate glands, skin and lungs. apart from all these taking a few deeps breaths is a great way to relieve stress, lower the heart rate , relax the muscles and reduce excessive anxiety levels. So.... what the right way?... how to increase the level of oxygen intake?..simple....
lets start with ABDOMINAL BREATHING..... next
Hey, one last word... to stay young...Scientists have also discovered that oxygen is critical for the production of ATP(chemical basis of energy production in the body is a chemical called Adenosine Triphosphate -ATP). If something goes wrong with the production of ATP, the result is lowered vitality, disease and PREMATURE AGING .so... now u know how to be a Margandeyan(boy who got boon from lord shiva to stay young always)
